Blackpink is a girl band belonging to South Korea formed by YG entertainment. It consists of members Jennie, Rose, Lisa, and Jisoo. The Blackpink group first debuted in the year 2016 with their album ‘Square one’, which featured ‘whistle’ as its number one entry on billboard world digital song sales and South Korea’s Gaon digital chart, respectively.
So far, Blackpink has been observed to be the highest-charting female Korean act on Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at #13 with the song “ice cream” in the year 2020 add peaked on Billboard 200 with “the album” in the year 2020 again. The album is the first K-pop album by a female band belonging to South Korea, which has sold over 1,000,000 copies. Blackpink is also the first-ever Korean girl band to have entered and topped billboard’s emerging artists chart as well as the world digital song sales chart of billboard three times.
Blackpink was formed by YG entertainment. They started recruiting teenagers and preteens to create a new band in the year 2009. Members of Blackpink have revealed that joining the YG Entertainment Group was no less than attending school. Rose has compared the training experience to X-Factor with dorm rooms. The Blackpink’s debut preparation began in early 2011. On November 14, 2011, it was revealed that a new girl would debut in Blackpink in the early half of 2012. On May 18, 2016, YG Entertainment confirmed that the girl band would make their debut in July. They stated that the members were chosen and selected after years of stiff competition. Jennie was the first member to be selected on June 1. She joined in 2010 as a trainee after moving to South Korea from New Zealand. Lisa was the second member to be revealed on June 8, 2016. She was one of 4000 applicants to pass YG entertainment audition in Thailand in 2010. She became the first foreign trainee in the year 2011. She was first introduced in a video that was posted on YG entertainment’s YouTube channel in 2012. On June 15, 2016, it was revealed that Jisoo would be the third member. Finally, on June 29, 2012, YG Entertainment confirmed that the band would have four members instead of the earlier planned nine. The official name Blackpink was also revealed during this public revelation.
As per the company, Blackpink symbolizes that being pretty is not everything. The name stands for a team that has not only beauty but also talent. The other names that were under consideration were baby monster, pink punk, and magnum. Blackpink released their first-ever Korean studio album called ‘the album’ on October 2, 2020. They have also released a documentary film Blackpink: light up the sky which has premiered on Netflix on October 14, 2020. The movie covers the first four years since the debut of the girl band in 2016 and the shooting for the Blackpink albums. The documentary has footage from their training days, behind-the-scenes stories looks at their home lives as well as interviews.
